Sometimes I try that very scary tactic, going to sleep very early, say like 7pm.........but most of the time I end up waking at 1am and not going back to sleep, UGH.
The key is to try to get back to sleep after 1am. Sometimes if you just lie there long enough you really can fall back asleep for a few hours. I still think my best REM sleep is after 3am.
I naturally wake up with the sun and have a really hard time in the winter. I end up staying up later because I sleep longer in the morning.
Sometimes I doze off on the couch and even if it's just 5 minutes, it can mess up my sleep for hours. Very frustrating.
I wish I could condition myself to go to bed early but about the earliest I can manage is 10pm. I think it comes from fighting my parents to stay up later as a kid, I just have a psychological issue with going to bed early like it's a punishment.

If I wake up between 12-3 am, I go take a very hot shower and then go back to sleep, and sleep very well from there on.
For work I rise at 2:30am--so I am in bed by 6:30pm. Even on my days off I like to go to bed early. I love my mornings where it is completely quiet, running out to the quiet grocery store that opens at 6am.
i have a radio program that i am hooked on and it starts at 7 pm so i hit the hay then .. i usually miss half of it as i fall asleep .. i wake up many times a night and wake up for good around 3 am ..
If anything, I go to bed even later than usually (or don't go at all skipping sleep 1-2 nights a week).
My "usual" was after 2 AM, now it's 3 or 4 AM and after 5 hrs of sleep I am done sleeping.
I don't have to be anywhere early in the morning, never had - except very rare appointments.
It takes me a while to get the day started but it's after 9PM or so when I am sharpest, mentally.
At that time l can solve difficult problems, write reports for work, learn new things... my brain is very active and mind very absorbent.

Interesting. I'm at my sharpest in the morning/noon hours and do my most challenging tasks within that window. After around 2pm my brain & eyes have usually had enough and I move on to physical work that doesn't involve computers or paperwork. When I start hitting walls with the physical work or making mistakes, that's it for the day. I know better than to push myself too hard.
