We are dealing with it now in our family. It is a combination of a head cold and stomach flu. Symptoms included: headache, malaise, low appetite, high fever alternating w/ low, a quick bout of vomitting, and one case of diarrhea.
We treated mostly naturally, using the fever to help kill the virus, drinking plenty of fluids (water, juice, herbal tea, NOTE: Avoid milk products as they create mucous), BRATT diet, using a humidifier, getting plenty of rest, showing love and compassion. When headaches and/or fever got real bad, we used acetaminophen, just for comfort.
Very impt. to stay hydrated and USE A HUMIDIFIER AND AVOID COUGH SUPRESSANTS. I say in caps b/c that's usually where folks are negligent and voila, a cough turns to pneumonia. I am up right now taking care of one of my "patients". Hot tea was administered and guafinasen (mucous thinner), an over the counter medication. That patient, my spouse, is having a harder time b/c they suppressed the fever in the beginning when they had the characteristic headache. The fever helps kill the viruses. They are now on Tamiflu.
For whatever reason, I did not get the flu. Thank God, because it would have been overwealming to deal with this if all of us were sick. As far as your question re. do you dive in and help or avoid the sick? Sorry, I can't turn my back on family. I believe showing love and compassion is part of the healing process. My kids could not even help themselves if they tried. They didn't want to eat (leading to more headaches) or drink fluids -- that's where the caregiver comes in and encourages them to do so.
I can see why many died during the 1918 outbreak. It is highly contagious and can be overwealming when so many are sick. Its not that the symptoms are any worse, its just that they come at you all at once and the majority of people in your household get them at the same time. My heart and respect go out to health care workers.
Were they confirmed to have the H1N1 by testing as that can be the seasonal flu also.We just had a 5year old die from confrimed case in a town near me and his first symthom was the ear ache. Then it went into his lungs.
