I just don't understand it. I AM old (63), but SKINNY. When it's cold, I just wear more clothes. Which came first the chicken or the egg? Is it a matter of being OLD or a matter of being FAT where you cannot take the cold? I would think skinny people, young or old, couldn't take the cold more since they don't have as much natural insulation. Is it more that wearing CLOTHES bothers them because everything is uncomfortable to wear because of their weight so they want to wear as little as possible?

My husband is overweight (250 lbs.) and I am probably underweight (100 lbs.) and he feels the cold more than me. I just don't get it.

No offense, but this is probably the dumbest thing I've ever seen on City-Data...

It's probably due to poorer circulation..

You are probably hyperthyroid, causing you to be skinny and hot.

Your husband is probably hypothyroid causing him to be fat and cold. Both of you may want to have thyroid studies done. Both conditions can kill you eventually.

Personally I hate wearing clothes, especially sleeves or anything up around my neck, so I wear tank tops year around and turn on the heat when I'm cold and the A/C when I'm hot.

Why do you care?

Because we fight all the time about this. My daughter and son-in-law live up North and set the thermostate at 65 degrees in the winter when it is below freezing. They are normal weight and young. Are they both hypothyroid too? They, and I, don't need it to be over 70 degrees. We can put on more clothes and use BLANKETS when it gets cold and not blast the heat to 75 degrees.

What is with you people that you need it to be so warm all the time?

People are different. My mother used to love the house to be 85 degrees when I was younger, I keep my AC set on 68. My wife is good with 68 as well.

What a rude question.

I'm not fat at all and I'm cold all the time. I know other thin people who are cold. Others are warm all the time. Some heavier people are hot, some cold.

Being hypo or hyperthyroid can affect your perception of temperature, but there are many people with normal thyroid function who feel either heat or cold more than others. It also has no correlation with being fat or thin.

Having a spouse who is uncomfortable at certain temps increases the other spouse's chances of being uncomfortable in the opposite temps though. I've known more couples who had thermostat wars than I can count, so it must be a medical fact!

OP, it has to do with blood circulation. As you get older, your blood circulation becomes poor. It varies by how much in different individuals. Folks with poor blood circulation will feel cold sooner.

I'm not as old as you, but I have trouble with the cold because my joints stiffen up. Sometimes I'm so stiff when I wake up that I have to wait an hour or so to tie my shoes. I can speed it up a little with a heating pad (or wear shoes that don't have to be tied). I don't tell my husband about it because I don't want him to feel like I'm getting old before him.

Maybe your husband has some specific issue with the cold that he doesn't want to tell you about.
