probably not. but today you got weapons that will go thru anything --so tons of steel is a poor defense and a poor use of money.
I was recently speaking with someone who was in the military and he told me that bullets have been known to go around a human's skull and shoot out the back leaving the person unarmed. If a human skull can defend against that sort of firepower, then I don't think steel is a bad defense.

Not quite. The Panzer 5, aka "Panther", was an excellent machine for its time; they just didn't have nearly enough of them. The older Panzer 4 was at least as good as the earlier-production American M4 Shermans.
Today's M2 Abrams Tank will easily outrun, outgun and outlast any WW2 German tank. If you've ever seen one in "run-and-gun" mode, you know that they can hit almost any target while running at speed across pretty rough terrain.
Oddly enough, today's M2 Bradley Fighting Vehicle (a troop-carrier) will outrun and outgun any WW2 German tank. Their armor would probably not withstand a direct hit by one of the late-war German 88mm tank guns -- but because of the Bradley's speed and maneuverability the German tank would have a significant problem actually delivering said round on target.

You're saying that their rounds would actually go through a tanks armor?
With all the armor advancements, upgrades, and scientific push that science has had on the military from ww2 on... it's pretty safe to say that American tanks are probably far better.
Now we could get into things like armor, damage, gun barrel sizes, and all types of micro details that tanks had in the second world war but.. I'm fairly certain with today's technology most tanks are far more versatile than say 50-60 years ago.
Do M1 Abrams have as much of a material advantage over T-90s, Merkavas, Leopard 2 and Challenger 2 that a Panther had over a T-34, or Sherman Firefly? Move, shoot and communicate is what the US Armored force teaches. A M1 being more reliable than a Panther and equal than or better in mobility to its counterparts where the Panther wasn't and with the new battle management computers I would say possibly. The last big battles were over 20 years ago and the T-72 armed forces did not stand a chance against M1 with less targeting and communications technology, nor Merkavas without the full set of cutting edge technology.
