I've never read anywhere that he was Gaulish...always Norman/Northmen
At that time, Harold Fairhair was trying to control and reorganise Norway and many people left Norway, Denmark and Sweden for better opportunity and freedom..

YES! I think he was a Gael. I think he has something interesting to teach us. I would like to research his geneaology. The Earls all fled to Flanders for safety too, and St Thomas More and John Locke both went there as well at some point in their lives.

I wonder if the Mures were any part of the Auld Alience? The Fleur de Lei is a symbol that follows that group.

I found this connection between the Normans and Galloway, but it's in the 1300's.. way after Rollo:Galway City - Galway - Ireland (http://www.chooseireland.com/galway/galway-city.html - broken link)

OrionsAngel....I got really curious about the Norman/Galaway connection so started looking around a little...Here is something I found that really astonished me...I found my maiden name on a list of Norman settlers...the name was not known in Ireland before that time...and anyone who heard that name would say Irish for sure...well, come to find out...I'm even less Irish than I knew In getting into genealogy recently I have had some interesting suprises, but nothing like this discovery...So thanks for this thread..without it I never 'woulda' guessed!!!!!!!!
