Like Obama's out to ruin everything for everyone.

There's no way that radio will ever fully "die" since it's a technology that really can't be fully replaced.

I'm sorry politics got into this (but as long as it did: GLENN BECK!!?? Give me a break!). If 'talk radio' were killed, I for one would be pleased. But Obama isn't out to kill it. Unfortunately, it will go on..and on...and on.

Now, where were we?

Oh, yeah. Now I remember!

riflemean: I still have a Sony 'Earth Orbiter' receiver (model CRF-5100) that I paid $425 for in 1971 (a ton of money now!). It was a newer version of the old Zenith Trans-Continental receivers which were (and are) highly regarded. It's still a great receiver, especially the audio, although it drifts quite a bit on SSB. But after 39 years, it still works quite well, although the bandswitching and pots are dirty and take some fiddling.

Just for fun.....

That $425 equals in 2010.......$425.00 in 1971 had the same buying power as $2,305.99 in 2010. Annual inflation over this period was 4.43%.

A source from which you can trust the reviews, a ham radio operators' site, http://www.eham.net/

On this page they review receivers:

I highly recommend a Kaito 1103 for around $80 through Amazon.

ERRATUM: I need to make a correction. In my previous post, I referred to the "Zenith Trans-Continental" radio. It should have read "Trans-Oceanic". I just wanted to correct myself before someone called me on it. Tightwad: I didn't even want to think about what $425 in 1971 dollars is equivalent to now! $2305.99!!! [expletives deleted]

AlstraQ: I recommend eHam highly. I use it quite often, just to see what the verdict is on radio equipment.

Back in the 70s, I had a Panasonic RF-2200. Killer radio. Got QSL cards from more than 50 countries. Very precise analog dial with reset function. They show up quite often on EBay. The manual is available online, and it does have complex controls, so you'll want to see how to use it.

It looks good for the price. Certainly better than the first SW receiver I had.
