I'm still wading through, husband died suddenly but has years worth of magazines (Scale Auto, etc.) and tons of stuff that a fortune was spent on for tractor trailer models, tools, etc. - any thought on what to do with this all? I hate to trash it (and to be honest, things are going to be dire). Thanks for any help.
ebay is the answer. Check the magazine prices, then put them on as fixed price items. Put tools on auctions. Buyers will not let much if anything go below market.
if he belonged to a hobby club or forum maybe you could post over there perhaps people there would buy. (I know a quilters forum where posts are allowed to sell off deceased forum members fabrics etc) So that might be a possibility. If you know any friend of his with the same hobby they might be interested in the magazines. I do not know american grocery shops but over here in our grocery shops there is a pinboard where people can attach little cards selling small items usually email/phone nr on it. Also a car boot sale, I sometimes read in UK people sell off lots of their surplus items that way.
Thanks to both of you, I was hoping to avoid the EBay route (I know that can be stressful and that's the last thing I need). I was hoping some kind of club or something as Nerys..... suggested, or a store/shop or something (I have no idea what a car boot sale is, LOL), yard sale maybe? I don't even know a value of the models/kits, tools, parts.
I found out via british tv what a car booth sale is basically people gather at a parking lot or a large public field and sell from the booth/baggage space of their car sometimes setting up a selling table in front of the car some people take a van instead of a car etc. Here in EU some farmers ask a monetary fee and organise the car booth sale on their farm fields. Once travelling through Denmark on a roadtrip I noticed people had a table or stand in front of their home outside of the garden near the road one could buy food items veggies produce eggs small packets of wood for fireplace in tourist rent holiday/vacation home . One street I remembered was every house a table with personal stuff for sale books mags household goods clothes etc The Danish also had a moneybox you payed into so you did not have a selling person there at all. I was amazed never seen this.
Find someone who will handle the ebay transactions listing and shipping for you for a cut of the profit. I usually give stuff to my buddies to sell it and split the profits. They do the listing payment and shipping.
Hyperscale.com and kitmaker.net are a collection of auto, ship, air, armor, etc. I would post there once you have catalogued what you have.
Then you have even more specific forums. steelnavy.com, modelwarships.com, cs.scaleautomag.com
Ebay will charge 10% + 3% with Paypal.
I would try the enthusiast forums first then Ebay. Ebay will also restrict you at first until you receive sufficient positive feedbacks to list more product.
You could try posting on Randy Ayer's modeling board? Back in the day when I was building that was my go to place for tips, advice, etc. Lots of good people when I was there...
