I am not much of a gambler.
There is a casino just a few miles down the road from us.
I took the family there for a nice dinner when we first moved here.
We all agreed that this place is not for us so we have not been back.
I love horse racing, but you have to do it right. It's not so much about winning money as it is about having fun. If it's all about winning money, then you're doing it wrong.
Get a group of friends together and head to the local track or race book. It helps if they're familiar with racing, but it's not necessary. Make sure everybody has the tools that they are comfortable with (Daily Racing Form for the very experienced, past performances for those less experienced, program for the rookies, morning line favorites, graded handicaps, pro selectors' comments, etc.). Find yourselves a place in a lounge overlooking the track. Maybe have some lunch, and/or a few drinks. Enjoy BSing each other about selections: "You really think that nag's gonna win? Seriously?" Place small wagers, and high-five the winners in your group, even if you lost. Above all, laugh a lot, and enjoy your time together.
At the end of the racing day, you've had a nice time with your friends, you haven't lost much, and even accounting for the cost of food, beverages, and lost bets, you've probably still spent less than you would at a pro baseball or football game. In the end, it's not so much about gambling as it is about having fun with friends.
I lived in Las Vegas for 22 years and I used to go down to the Western 3X a year to empty my penny jar as it was the last place in Las Vegas where you could drop pennies into the slot machines. When the Western closed, that was the tombstone to my gambling. I will not play the electronic machines!
Enjoy the wins and dislike the walk of shame.
Tried card tables...and lost quick.
Moved on to slots and found it more delighting.
I had to learn intense discipline when just having a few Buck's. Overall it's just plain fun to listen to others give me tips. As if I don't know how to play.
My uncle did the horse racing. Fascinating how he called each race. That guy always walked away with more then he came in with. He knew the history of the horse, it's jockey and the owners. He just had a knack for horses. He even had a sentimental side when he'd hear they had to put a horse down.
And what are your favourite games in this case? I like blackjack and different lotteries the most of all, what about you?
Lotteries actually have the lowest payout-ratio of any form of gambling there is (at least, the last time I checked).
