The light colored sofa is too casual in style for the architecture of the room. The dark colored sofa works perfectly. You can offset the dark floor and sofa with great area rug
Neither entertainment center is right for the style of either sofa or the architecture of the room.
If you're not using the room as a dining room, remove the light fixture.
A sofa is a foundation piece. It is the most expensive item in the room and if you buy a decent one it will last the longest. So buy the sofa you want and then build the room around it with the cheaper items. This includes paint, so paint the room to suit the sofa you buy. Buy a rug to suit the sofa. Buy your accessories to suit the sofa.
Sofas, beds, and dining tables are foundation pieces that you should build around, not try to squeeze into an environment you've already created.
Personally I like the style of the darker sofa. They lighter sofa's style looks slovenly, to me.
Thanks for all the suggestions - what an awesome forum this is ! And thank you for the kind words of praise - hubbie & I are indeed very excited about the new house.
Will certainly keep all the tips in mind as I hunt for bargains this Labor day weekend and hope to post pictures of what we finally choose.
Incidentally the sofa pics were just samples I got off the internet - hope to get better styles at Ashley's (can't afford Haverty's :-)
