Family portraits in the dining room is something that has been going on for several hundred years - quite popular in the 18th, 19th centuries (when oil portraits of family or famous people were often displayed).....so I say go for it.
Oh good grief, whatever YOU want inside YOUR OWN HOME is how you should do things. Who cares what is "acceptable" in the designer world, they do not live in that home you do so make it your own no matter if it falls inline with the rest of the cookie cutter, magazine photos you see at the check out in the grocery.
Do what you like We personally don't hang family photos around our house and instead keep them digitally or tucked away in photo albums we can pull out. Everyone is different. We keep some interesting books in our dining room and while some people might tell you that is a no-no, we have had guests pick up these books after dinner when people are talking and it led to more conversation. There aren't a lot of black and white rules with this stuff.
I always wondered if it was "ok" to hang or place family photos in the formal dining room. Just curious what your thoughts are on that?
You should decorate/design your home for whatever suits your taste.
That said, when we were looking for our next home, we wanted a private dining room (do not like open concept). We ended up buying a 1930s Arts & Crafts -- the dining room has two sets of French doors (one to the back parlor, one for the front parlor) and a swinging door to the kitchen. We plan to hang a family photo gallery in the dining room, but probably only on one wall. It will be the only place in the house with family photos (don't like photos scattered throughout the house). We are also contemplating having some books in there since the dining table also doubles as a place to read, etc.
Its your house. If hanging them in the dining room is the best place for them, by all means do so.
Let us know what you do.
