Refinishing your cabinets the traditional way, stripping, sanding and staining is not all that hard. My friend and I did one kitchen cabinets that was about half the amount you have in one week, not even working fulltime on it. Yes it takes some elbow work but it's doable. If you like the cabinets consider it. It turns out much better than the rustoleum product I've seen, it ends up streaking and being uneven unless you know how to refinish so I guess why not refinish?

My house was built at the same time as yours. I have pickled oak in the kitchen and baths. For some reason the cabinets in the bath dont look as pink as the kitchen. I painted mine. Some are against painting cabinets but I like the look myself. Just make sure you prep well and use good paint. I used oil based paint by Ben. Moore. It took me a month. I took my time. We then cut out the centers in the upper cabinets and installed glass. Then we got granite counters. My cabinet above the stove is also slighter higher but a short cabinet. Almost makes me wonder if it was moved up a bit to accommodate adding a microwave later. Anyway, congrats on your new place.

Benjamin Moore has a new product for cabinets called "Advance". It's gotten very good reviews. Since your cabinets are new, they would probably need just a light sanding (if at all) and then paint.

I would hire a painter rather than a cabinet guy to do this if you want to hire it out, if you want to go that route.
