The windows in my breakfast nook were painfully bare, with just cellular shades. I found several websites that showed how to make cornices using insulation foam board (much lighter than using wood, so it was easy to hang with just a wire loop hooked over a nail on each end.

I got a 6-pack of the foam boards (48"x14" each) at Lowes for $11, bought batting, fabric, tassel trim, hot glue sticks, straight pins, white duct tape, and thin wire for hanging. Total cost for two windows was about $70. The tassel trim was actually the most expensive part of this project, at $30. As you can see from the photos, I haven't even added it yet, because I can't figure out how to attach it perfectly straight. So that is my question---how do you attach trim to projects absolutely, flawlessly straight? I'm thinking maybe a laser level and double sided tape?

Here's my before, during, and after photos.

I LOVE those!!!!!!!! Love the toile - it's very sophisticated. This makes me want to do this in my bedroom.

Actually I believe this print is called a Jacobean floral (I just learned this term last week while searching for fabrics), but it is in the subdued neutral shades that I've often seen in toile. It truly is a gorgeous, substantial weight fabric---and I got it on sale at Joann's for only $5.00 a yard!! (I'd been looking at some custom order decorator fabric that was $65/yard, so YIPPEE for savings that I can now spend on another project!)

Those are beautiful, kayanne. They really dress up that corner without hiding the view from the windows.

The tassel trim hangs from the bottom, right? Why can't you just glue it to that edge? Maybe I'm envisioning the wrong thing. Looks great, by the way!

Thanks!

And yes, the trim will go on the bottom, but because of the batting, there is no sharp corner to measure from. I straight-pinned the tassel trim to it yesterday, just to see if I like it better plain or trimmed (I just poked the pins straight through the trim and into the styrofoam). Although the trim dressed it up, I could see that it wasn't perfectly straight, no matter how hard I tried.

Yes. Velcro just might do it. Please excuse my primitive drawing. The red line would be a strip of Velcro or some sort of fabric adhesive. Attached to the back side of the cornice on the flat part. Maybe?
