I'm having engineered hardwoods put in through my entire downstairs.
My contractor directed me towards Floor & Decor and Lumber Liquidators. The flooring at those places are not big brand names like Anderson/Mohawk/Shaw/Armstrong etc.
He says the quality is the same, and people that buy the above are just paying for the name. I believe him, but I was wondering what others on here think? I'm adding the hardwoods for resale purposes, as well as for myself.
He does say to stay away from the engineered woods with MDF, as I picked up several samples from Lumber Liquidators that had a layer of that. He is concerned they could get ruined if they get moist before I'm ready to sell.
Is it worth investing in big name hardwoods? Or should I stick with the cheaper products (not so cheap that they have MDF) offered at Floor & Decor/LL? I truly don't think it will make any difference in resale.
Rather than type a long post, I'm posting a link for you to read. NO, not all engineered flooring is the same. There are different plys available, different finishes, different warranties. If you use a no name flooring, who is going to stand behind it if it goes bad? Lumber Liquidators has already thrown their customers under the bus with flooring that exceeded the limits of formaldehyde. Many of the floors they refused to replace. I think I'm correct in saying all of their flooring is made in China, home of the "we don't give a crap about the americans, just give us your money". I would strongly suggest because it's not a cheap date to replace a floor to use a name brand product and not a cheap line either. Labor to put a floor down is as much as the flooring and in some instances, more. Buy the best you can afford and enjoy the view. You'll be glad you did. https://www.thisoldhouse.com/ideas/a...ed-wood-floors
Oh my. Lumber Liquidators is not where you want to buy flooring. You *might* wind up with something okay, but the odds are against you. I have looked at the engineered offerings at Floir and Decor, just recently. I’d stay away from their stuff as well.
Eh, we went with Bellawood (LL brand) because the previous owners installed it and we wanted to have the same manufacturer for all. That has plywood, not MDF, and a wear layer that can be refinished at least once. I'd been ok, over a year in. But it scratches easily. Not sure if that's particularly a LL problem or a species problem (Brazilian cherry). The key thing IMHO is the wear layer from any brand.

As a wood installer for over 30 yrs, I installed all those so call name brands. I went to lumber liquidators and bought some Bruce solid wood made by Armstrong and installed that in all my living areas. I installed some "timeless" red oak strips that look fabulous. All the big boys carry junk as well as good stuff. Don't be fooled by price or brand name. I also bought some wall and floor tile and stone from Floor Decor for my remodel two years ago. Great stuff, we have had plenty of compliments on the products. If it makes you feel better to over pay go for it. Trust me I have had to replace plenty of floor from the big boys due to defects over the years as well.
I'm most likely going to end up with an engineered handscraped hardwood from Floor & Decor made by LifeScapes. Not a big brand name but the floor looks good and hopefully should hold up well.
