So the in-laws are coming down to visit for the first time in 2 months, and I really want to spruce up the place and finish the design before they arrive. Like the title suggests, any input is appreciated!

I am renting this place so any MAJOR changes I really can't do (like ANYTHING to the kitchen). But I am willing to paint ANY color, even the ceiling. Yes, most of the furniture came from Ikea or Target. There is a hookup above the coffee table for light fixture. Of course, the baby proofing & items must stay.

Couches & Huge Sliding Glass Door, Corner View

The rug, curtains and dining chairs are all wicker (or patterned like it). There are two small glass vases on the shelf above the tv that match the on the coffee table. I really hate that standing lamp in the corner, it must die... On the red half table is a fake plant my husband bought, thinking it matched the painting in the entryway. I have no clue what to put in the bookcase...

You could put a more horizontal piece of art where the stars are. You could also paint the wall separating the living area from the kitchen...just that one wall. Also you could add pillows or a throw to your couch. Maybe add a second color to compliment the red. Like green or a blue purple. Good luck

Why don't you change the color of the living room. like your wicker furniture go for warmer colors perhaps a dark wall in Dark Red on one wall and others it light colors. Colors can really bring out the decor in any room.

Good luck with it !

Put a tall live plant/palm where the floor lamp is.

Put a black end table with a table lamp between the couch and love seat, where the red half table is. (Target or Ikea)

Put red, black and gold silk pillows on the couch

($9.99 @ Linens & Things)

and a red alpca throw draped over the back of the chair.

(Crate & Barrel)

Put a wooden bowl (Target) on the coffee table.

or place a red carved box on a straw mat in the center of the table.

(Pier One)

On the wall behind the couch, a large print in the same style as the lily print in the foyer.

or

(Art.com)

On the shelf over the tv, a set of three 12" Asian ceramic tiles, red with a touch of black.

Put ornately-bound books in one of the squares of the shelving unit.

(any bookstore or ebay)

In another square, put 2-3 photographs in red and black frames.

(Pier One)

Place other interesting pieces as needed, such as this laquered bamboo floor vase

(Target)

or this lamp

(Pottery Barn)

I am new here and I am no expert but here are my impressions, for what little they are worth!

Maybe it’s just the photo, but that picture above the little foyer table seems kind of high. With your thermostat there, this would be a good spot for a small shelf where you can lose the thermostat behind whatever you put on the shelf. I don’t think a flat picture on the wall can work with the thermostat there. It’s almost like the picture is drawing attention to the thermostat.

Your bookcase needs larger items. A nice planter with real greens, books, a pretty accent light, that vase in the top corner looks good, hcgCali’s idea of red and black frames is perfect, a soup tureen, a stack of folded linens, the possibilities are endless. I bet you could hit one flea market and come home with enough odds to fill the voids.

The little red table seems to be the wrong scale for your living room, with the larger furniture and coffee table. One of those particle board round tables with a black floor length cover with a red topper (or vice versa) would be beautiful in that corner IF you can trust baby not to pull on the tablecover.

The stars carry the red to the walls nicely but they seem a little too country for the rest of your décor. You can find tons of metal wall art pieces at Pier 1 or even if you have a “Big Lots”. I think you can do a large wall cheaper with a selection of that type of wall hanging than with anything else.

The shelf above the tv would look nice with a collection of colored glass objects, or a one sided dried flower arrangement with candlesticks and maybe a round tray standing up against the wall.

Everything you have is square and I would try to mix some other shapes in where ever you can.

I love the arrangement in your living room. The furniture looks GREAT with those drapes and the red rug really works there. Pillows would definitely help break up all of the brown upholstery.

I just love the way you have used red to unite everything and it works so well with the black and the browns. You are off to a great start. Please post pics of the finished project!
