I'm trying to figure out what width curtains to use on a large window.
Its a sliding glass door with an extra glass panel. The sliding door is in the middle. The width of this window is 105" . In terms of curtains, 54" is a common width, and then there are 100" as well. I've also seen one pair that are 80" wide.
I'm thinking the 54" would not be wide enough? 100" seems too long... but I don't know. Maybe two 52"panels on each side?

Are you wanting the curtains to be functional, or will they always be open and to the side? If you want them to be functional, then 2 54" panels wouldn't be wide enough. You'd either have a gap in the middle or on the sides when closed. I would go with the 80" or 100". It's typically recommended to hang curtains high and wide. You want the curtains to extend past the edge of the door/window.
General rule of thumb. You always want the curtains to be 2 times the width of the window. Three times if you want a fuller look and depending upon the material.
I think you need the help of a decorator to give you advice. What you buy will depend on what kind of privacy you need, your budget, your decor—probably other things.
You can look at curtains online at the Pottery Barn site to get an idea of what is generally available.
You can hire a decirator by the hour. It might be a good investment for you,
Thanks.... these curtains will be closed almost all the time when its hot or very cold. The window faces west, so in the summer, in the afternoon, the room gets very hot. That is my main reason for getting them. It would be nice to have a bit of insulation from the cold in the winter as well, but summer is when the real problem happens.
My goal is to have something that looks nice, but I'm not looking to spend a ton of $$$. I've been looking at curtains on Home Depot, IKEA, and Overstock so far.
I am going to do a double layer with two curtain rods... heavier curtains in the front, and then a sheer layer in the back.
I think I am going to have to buy four 52" panels ... the 100" panels come in very limited colors/styles.
I've been looking at Home Depot and Overstock and not really finding anything.
Years ago, I bought some curtains for a bedroom from Target. They turned out to be really nice quality for the price. Today I started browsing Target and there are a lot of great choices if I buy the 52" panels.

If you have a sewing machine, you can sew 2 panels together.
It’s a shame that Country Curtains went out of business. They always had plenty of wide choices, and also insulated choices.
