I've only seen hickory used on cabinets with the vertical pattern emphasised. But I'd much prefer mostly drawers in the base cabs---anyone ever see this?

Sure! Quite a bit in more modern kitchens- people tend to prefer drawers for pots and pans than just stacking up a pile that's impossible to maintain; because you always need the pot or pan that's at the bottom of the stack!
Thanks----I know i prefer drawers of several sizes for my base cabinets! My question is about using hickory wood to make them. I think because the wood has such a huge pattern it might not work. But it might look great, i just cannot imagine it.
Hickory is not one I am as familiar with since it is not used as much in the styles that I like. However, matching grain on lower cabinets can look really nice for woods where you want the feeling of a larger grain pattern as opposed to more contained within the individual panel. However, this look tends to look best with full overlay slab type drawer fronts. Since you are going with Hickory, my assumption is that you are looking for something a little more traditional than that.

It can be done, see the example above, but an alternative is pull out drawers behind doors.

I have cabinets now with one shelf and one drawer. I can’t imagine it would be hard to do 2 drawers instead of one if the preference is for a more traditional look. I think it looks kind of busy with a traditional look and hickory.
We had custom Hickory in our farm kitchen, the cabinets were indeed run with vertical grain, but the drawer fronts were horizontal grain orientation...I don't recall it looking odd. But as stated, a cabinet maker could orient the grain pattern to suit you....
