Thanks for all the replies. I'm guessing there is another thread like this (or twenty others) but I did not search. Hope I did not add an unneeded thread - my apologies if I did.
I have 50 year old wallpaper in one room...40 year old wall paper in another. In the basement, that WP is peeling right off. In the typically more oven-like upstairs, the wallpaper is adhered to the wall with the force of a thousand suns. I am just going to paint over that wallpaper.
Noooooo....don't do that.
You would lose a sale to many people over that. You sure would to me.
I think you are correct. Patch the holes first, sand and spackle and sand again if needed. Allow time to dry before priming and painting.
I started to reply to your mention that you were not going to remove the wallpaper and just paint over it.
Personally I never prime unless I'm going from a dark color to something much lighter. I always plan on two coats anyway so it works.
OP-your house would have to be 110% perfect in all other ways for me to purchase it with painted over wall paper. The only time I've seen that look acceptable is when the house is a hundred years old with coats and coats of paint over the wall paper. Rent a wall paper steamer or hire someone to remove it.

What about wallpaper over old wallpaper?
Just kidding...but not really.
Is that as bad as painting over wallpaper, or worse?
^
that gray and those floors and cabinetry do not match at all, at least I dont think they match. Gray, does not match with any type of brown, tan.....I just dont like it.
Agreed!! That looks awful. Grays and browns are a big no in my book.
I just took down a small wall's worth in my kitchen today and I damn near wanted to smash my face into a wall by the time I was done. It was absolutely MISERABLE...and that kitchen wallpaper isn't nearly as adhered to the wall as the upper level (which is the size of a studio apartment).
