I live in an artistic community. White walls are "fine," but beautiful colors are even better.

NO!!!! Beige is horrid, and for many people would mean a complete repainting.

I have 50 year old wallpaper in one room...40 year old wall paper in another. In the basement, that WP is peeling right off. In the typically more oven-like upstairs, the wallpaper is adhered to the wall with the force of a thousand suns. I am just going to paint over that wallpaper.
Noooooo....don't do that.

You would lose a sale to many people over that. You sure would to me.

Of course not. White is completely neutral! MOST houses will be painted white. Mine was painted white.

I started to reply to your mention that you were not going to remove the wallpaper and just paint over it.

Personally I never prime unless I'm going from a dark color to something much lighter. I always plan on two coats anyway so it works.

OP-your house would have to be 110% perfect in all other ways for me to purchase it with painted over wall paper. The only time I've seen that look acceptable is when the house is a hundred years old with coats and coats of paint over the wall paper. Rent a wall paper steamer or hire someone to remove it.

What about wallpaper over old wallpaper?

Just kidding...but not really.

Is that as bad as painting over wallpaper, or worse?

Agreed!! That looks awful. Grays and browns are a big no in my book.

But serious question: If a person REALLY does it well, is it possible you wouldn't even tell if someone painted over extremely old wallpaper?

Or would I just fool some people, but most people would know?

I just took down a small wall's worth in my kitchen today and I damn near wanted to smash my face into a wall by the time I was done. It was absolutely MISERABLE...and that kitchen wallpaper isn't nearly as adhered to the wall as the upper level (which is the size of a studio apartment).
