My husband thinks I'm over-thinking things.

We're gearing up to paint our formal dining room. He wants to paint it a cranberry color above the chair rail, and white below. While I like the colors, they won't match our china, which will be displayed in our hutch (the china is blue and yellow).

So, should we be matching to room to our china?

It depends on the color of blue and yellow. If you mean the blue is light and yellow is bone, then it might work. But if the china is a bold blue with bold yellow it might not go. If you like the color, go for it. It is only paint and the room could be painted again if it does not look right. Jay

I believe it CAN work, since cranberry is a blue-red, it may well be compatible with the blue in the china. I presume your china has a white ground? If so, you have that consistent with the lower wall and ceiling. This makes WHITE your predominate color.
I'm thinking red, blue and yellow are about equidistant on a colorwheel, so it can work. Just choose the shade of red by using the china as a guide to the tone.

I would base my paint color on what looks good with the wood, fabric (drapes and rug), metals and style in the room. I wouldn't just choose a color that my husband likes - you need to consider everything that will be in the room and come up with a plan of how you ultimately want the room to look. Failing to consider and plan the final outcome of the room and neglecting to choose carefully each facet of the room is why so many are ultimately unsatisfied with the end result.

Our china is part of this set http://tinyurl.com/d9a6rs (broken link) and our furniture is cherry, Queen Anne style. We have honey-ish hardwoods. We haven't picked out drapes or a rug yet. Any suggestions?

We are currently house-hunting and I can't tell you how many homes have red/cranberry dining rooms. For us, it has been a turn off. We have noticed that the newer model homes have some really cool colors - like silvery/gray blues, and other light, almost pastel colors. They look so fresh and classy with the white chair rail. I guess what I am saying is that I'm afraid the cranberry diningroom will look dated in no time. (just one girls opinion) But try looking at model homes in person or online for the most current trends. ~K~

I agree with Kandy.

Cam - your china is contemporary looking - I would explore a different color palette than cranberry and white. I like the silvery/gray blues that Kandy describes....go to a Benjamin Moore paint store and really look at the gray/blue colors and see if anything feels right to you. Personally, I'd pick my rug out first though.

The wall colors doesn't require to be exactly the same color as the walls of the room. You can choose some light neutral color for your formal dining space and add accessories to it with something that would come close to your crockery. There is no hard and fast rule for the wall paint being the same color as the crockery.

The picture looks more like turquoise, orange and green. This is not the blue/yellow I was picturing before. Can't you talk your husband into a nice medium shade of green instead of red?
By the way, what's a husband doing with an opinion about decorating????

I know, I know. LOL I always ask his opinion, it never jives with what I say, and then I go with what I want anyway.

The picture isn't the greatest, but it's all I could find. It is an orangey yellow, but the blue is actually more of a violet blue than a turquoise. It's funny you say green -- I was just looking at a Glidden color called Crown of Laurel.

I would love silver, but our kitchen/family room is a light grey, so I'd like to offset that with a bolder color.

Thanks for all the input!
