Its probably a no-brainer if you have a large number of lights that work long hours, but the margins get pretty slim for people who operate at a smaller scale, particularly if they are generally pretty mindful about shutting off lighting in spaces that are unused and more particularly if the CFL's are failing in a similar timeframe as the incandescents.

Perhaps, but even with my outside lights, which I leave on for security, and which were relatively low wattage, they really added up to savings. I'm a hound when it comes to shutting not-in-use lights off, so that was not really part of my savings. The vast majority was the outside lights which I leave on late at night for security and which, while not very high wattage, add up over many hours. Mine are not failing nearly as quickly as incandescents and with the low cost of CFLs in these shapes now, the savings are noticeable for me.
