I had old tile in a shower professionally painted ("refinished") about 2 years ago. Despite following the cleaning instructions, the paint is now peeling off in sheets, there's mold underneath some of the paint, and it's a mess.
Has anyone had this problem? What are my options for fixing it? This is a rental property and I'm looking for the most cost effective method possible.
My mother had this done to her tub instead of replacing it. It lasted a year. It started peeling around the drain and then just bubbled everywhere else. My husband replaced her tub.
I guess a solution to your problem might be to get a good scraper, some sort of paint remover and scrape it off. Ugh...Sounds like a mess. Good luck!
The fact is that there are reputable firms that can do an excellent job of "reglazing in-place" both tile and bathroom fixtures. The problem is that the labor needed to do this and the kind of chemicals that work best make it more costly than just ripping everything out and getting new low end tile or fixtures. The other option is to have the tiled areas overlaid with "cultured marble" which also tends to be cost effective..
Mold + rental = possible lawsuit. I wouldn't mess around. Rip out the old shower and drop in a new one.
