I just mowed over my sprinkler head, but I'm going out of town without enough time to properly repair it. Does anybody know of a quick way for me to temporarily cap the head so I can leave the auto system on while I'm gone?
Depends on teh nature of the damaage. Was the riser broken or cracked yet the sprinkler head is still intact? Saw off the riser at the thread and screw a cap on the riser OR, if the head is OK, re-attach the sprinkler head.
I can't find any traces of the head. It must have been totally demolished
I don't have any caps, and all my local stores are closed now. Is there any quick and dirty homemade remedy?
without the proper repair items, there is no guarantee that any gerry-rigged repair will last. However in an emergency if the riser is still intact with the threads, you can take a piece of rubber (innertube) and shove it tightly into the riser. next take another piece and wrap it over the top draping down the sides. Attach two hose clamps as tight as possible, but not too tight to crush the riser. If you don;t have hose clamps, zip ties will work to some extent. Or go to the neighbors and see if anyone has a extra old head lying around.
However, don;t be surpirse if when you return, you have a fountain in your lawn.

Out of curiosity are these street pressure or house pressure?
I don't want to brag but ummm..I'm pretty good at mowing sprinklers heads off into shreds. That being said, I have not found a quick remedy to fix this without going to the store to replace the head or buying a cap. The last thing you want while away is your sprinkler system going haywire spraying stuff it shouldn't. Leave it off till you get back and can fix it properly.
Feh. I always kept a few replacement heads and any non-functioning heads, just for emergency fixes. Otherwise, duct tape and hose clamp. Swearing at them doesn't work. You have to swear at the mower.
Feh... You have to swear at the idiot pushing the mower.
