Any thoughts on these two, or others in this range....
Of those two, I'd definitely go with the Dewalt. The slider isn't really a necessity and adds blade deflection due to the rails deflecting. That would be especially bad on a cheap slider like the Ryobi.

I've used or owned Craftsman, Dewalt, and Hitachi. All have strengths and weaknesses. I prefer 12" to 10" because of it's cutting capacity.
Craftsman are good- nothing spectacular
Dewalt's most talked about feature- it's ergonomically designed handle/trigger. Which I think wins over a lot of people- I had a couple of trim carpenters that used Dewalt and I have also owned one.
My current favorite (and definitely not priced for the typical DIY'er)- Hitachi 12 In. Sliding Dual Compound Miter Saw. It literally has every feature a trim carpenter could ever want in a saw. Drawback- the handle/trigger. It's vertical; as compared to Dewalt's horizontal.

Thanks. I just can't decide what I actually "need"....I could probably get by with a good miter box, but I'd rather get the saw!!

10" or 12"
sliding or non-sliding
single bevel or dual bevel
dewalt, hitachi, ryobi, ridgid, makita, etc....

I'm using this first for basic crown molding and maybe later some other household projects. I have a jigsaw and circular saw also....

Or, you could go with the one I recently bought- it puts all the others to shame, especially when it comes to dust collection. Of course, that comes with a price....

Keep in mind that Craftsman is not a brand. It is just the Sears name stuck on other brand equipment. thus a "Craftsman saw will be Dewalt, or Ryobi, or Milwaulkee or pssbily even that Harbor Freight junk with a Craftsman badge stuck on it. Oten they have differen t levels of quality for Craftsman as well.

When it comes to power tool, always buy the absolute best you can. You will never look back and regret it. But if you go cheap, you very well might.

I hear ya....I can go up to about $300, so I'd like to get the best I can for that amount....like the 10" DeWalt with less features, as opposed the the Ryobi with more features....

I can vouch for the Dewalt, I have had 2, the first was stolen and I purchased another. I use mine alot, very handy for cutting a 2x4 or a piece of metal flashing. I keep trying to destroy the dewalt blade so I can buy a nice Forrest blade but it keeps cutting smoothly.

$219.00 (Lowes) might be pushing the price limit and needs for typical/average home use, but all in all a good buy.
