I'm interested in exploring home automation systems. I want to be able to have lights turn on and off automatically, unlock/lock doors or turn on/off lights remotely, operate garage door remotely, control my thermostat remotely, and probably a host of other things I just can't think of at the moment. Nothing too crazy.
I dabbled a little bit with the X-10 system over 11 years ago but I'm sure things have changed since then. I'm looking for something I can do myself (without a degree in engineering) and not overly pricey. Something I can do a little at a time. Something that works with the iPhone. And something that can be easily installed in an existing finished home, not during construction. Mac software would be a plus, but I can run windoze.
Okay the link you provided doesnt give an estimate of the cost to put this type of system in a home. Could you please share what you paid or at least bring us close to the figure...i'm very interested...

Looks complicated and expensive.
It's only as complicated as you make it. As far as price- I have no idea what the phrase "not overly pricey" means in your eyes. It has the capability to fully automate a residence- automation doesn't come cheap. At least it isn't a PLC.
Don't know if you found your way here, maybe it will help you understand the system- Product Selection Page

Thanks in advance
Cost will be determined by how much automation you employ. What
type(s) you employ and the labor that would be associated with it. Plus an iPhone!
Component costs will vary depending on the vendor you receive them from.
I'm still having trouble with their website.
It seems to keep referring to "your installer".
It looks like a really solid system, the website just doesn't make it look very DIY friendly.
Where can I buy something like a starter kit to get me going?
So you installed everything yourself?

This is not a "off-the-shelf product". You would need to contact an electrical supply house that deals with Lutron.
This is probably the biggest outfit in TX- Elliott Electric Supply
Ok, thanks.
Sounds like it's not a DIY product. So with installer prices, probably going to be out of my price range.
I'll keep it in mind though.
Maybe I can try to get the basic control portion installed and then add to it later.
Anyone else have any other suggestions of products I should look into?
