I'm going to get either a deck or patio done in my back yard this month, but I'm still mulling over whether to do a PVC/composite deck or paved patio. I've gotten a few quotes and they're almost about the same price, maybe a $1k difference.

For my space, what should I do?

I'd like to conserve the current patio then add the patio or deck. Either way, the deck/patio will stop before the current patio.

The deck would likely have stairs coming out on the side (away from the house).

I think a deck would be nicer, given you are 4 feet off the ground. What do most of your neighbors have?

You really don't have much room to work with there, so I'd go with a deck, with steps going down both sides.

It's 10x20 for the deck, I've got a couple new quotes, lowest was $5600, highest was little over $10k, seems the norm is around $8000.

neighbors have small decks, nothing as big as I'm planning. I saw one house with a pretty nice patio though.

Based on the pics I saw, I say a long narrow, walk out onto deck with stairs at each end.

Assuming the bushes/trees are along the property line, be sure any structure (deck) can be that close to the property line. If not, you might be forced into a ground level patio.

Hope this helps.

I can see reasons for both.

I like walking out to the level fo the door. However, from a privacy perspective, a ground level patio is better. a deck, you're going to be standing over the bushes, close to the porperty line.

I'd go for a patio since they're low maintenance.

A patio would have to have steps coming from the door. That means that you would lose patio space. A deck would have steps going into the yard, and you wouln't lose any space.
