I have had some last only one season. Others were given to us 7 or 8 years ago when they were already old, and they are still running. My dad has one from my grandfather that must be 1970s or maybe older. Of course it may have been recharged, but I doubt it. That thing is so huge and inefficient, I would think if it ran out of freon, he would just toss it.
Older window AC, with the heavy copper coils, definitely lasted a lot longer.
New production it seems likely they are using cheaper alloys and thinner metal as a cost-savings measure, so the units are more prone to pinhole leaks, and not worth repairing.
Had a 10k thru-wall that came with my house, can't be any newer than 1980's.
That thing froze out the entire house. Totally wanted to take it with me when we sold.
my window air conditioner is turning on and off every 2 seconds. The digital display reads EE. could this mean it's low on freon? it started after I cleaned the unit.

Doubtful. Look for wires you might have damaged or loosened, or a break in the lead to the little bulb thermostat. Chances are your unit is now toast.
All sealed-systems leak, each and every one. It may be a femto-gram of refrigerant leaking every so often......... but over time, that adds-up to low refrigerant and crummy cooling. 5 or 6 years, yeah, that is pretty good for a window AC.
After some time you need to recharge your AC for better cooling. It means refill gas or freon in your AC. @www.refrigerantrecoverymachine.com/how-to-recharge-a-window-air-conditioner/
