I've heard of this before and it turned out to be a sewer vent issue.

Call the management today and have them check this out before someone dies !!!

I'm going through this, also. We inky smell it downstairs. I'm not bothered by it, but my daughter is. I think I'm gong to tidy the place well and then invite the landlord over. If she sits here a few minutes, she's bound to smell it: that same, sickening sweet, cherry smell, very transient, but powerfully strong.
I'm wondering if it's a bad problem now, maybe something to do with pipes?

It may be that you have a neighbor smoking meth or crack. I have a similar situation where the smell is coming from the bathroom cabinet. My neighbors behind me were smoking in their apartment and that smoke was coming into my apartment from the bathroom cabinet. The manager asked them to smoke outside. Now I am getting a sick sweet smell, sometimes a heavy skunk smell, and one time a burnt plastic smell, all originating from my bathroom cabinet under the sink. My research has shown that these all may be drug use smells originating from the unit behind mind, adjoined at the bathroom wall. I have started a search to find the right person to discuss this with my local police department.

Could it be from mold, by any chance? I am dealing with a similar smell from the a/c in both my house and car and so far the most likely culprit is some nasty mold.

Is a freon leak an issue here? That can smell if that's the case.
