Hi all!

Can someone recommend a good combo tool set for a beginning DIY person? We are moving to a new home and our measly drill broke, so I've decided to get a tool set since it seems like a better deal, but all of the options are overwhelming. I want to eventually do things like install crown moulding or put in a built in shelf, but no huge projects.

There is NO such thing.

Buy tools WHEN you have a need them and get the best you can justify.
(cost relative to nature/frequency of use)

The first tool to get... is a good book. The best $23 you'll ever spend:
Amazon.com: New Fix-It-Yourself Manual: How to Repair, Clean, and Maintain Anything and Everything In and Around Your Home (9780895778710): Reader's Digest: Books

One general use tool to get several of (glove box too):

LOL I don't mean basic tools, I mean power tools. I wasn't clear sorry. I have a pretty nice set of basic tools for someone living in an apartment. My husband is fairly handy too. My drill died (it was my mom's anyway) and I want to get a combo kit because they share a battery.

I still like 18v NiCad sets, however, most are now Li-ion. My original Black and Decker set was wonderful but I ended up getting the Milwaukee Li-ion set because the circular saw blade was 6-1/2 inches in diameter. I think that the Ryobi and Porter Cable stuff is nice, but, would still have no problem getting a skill or Black and Decker to start with. To be honest, my first generation v18 Li-ion batteries were VERY unreliable and I hope that the technology has stepped up to the plate. Milwaukee and Dewalt are more expensive to be sure..I bet Sears has some dependable sets.. I any case, having the reciprocating saw and a 6-1/2 inch circular saw is part of my recommendation, but, the everyday work horse is the drill so make sure you shop that till you love it..Please let us know what you decide!

Power tools even more so.
Don't buy an X if you can rent one for a weekend and not need it again for 10 years.

As far as choosing which cordless brand ... that's like getting married.
I have all DeWalt... but any of the major bands are mostly as good/bad as any other.

That depends, you rent a floor sander. You don't rent a drill. If I was looking at power tools I'd be buying in this order:

  • You need a drill so buy a good drill, look at the combo kits with impact driver. You don't need a hammer drill so buy a cheap one at harbor freight when you need it.
  • Circular saw.
  • Table saw, certainly don't go cheap here.
  • Miter saw or radial arm saw.
  • Grinder, J*ig saw or sawzall.
EDit: lol the word J*ig is censored.

Here's why you buy good stuff, this saw is older than me. It's probably almost 45 years old. Third house it's been in since my Father bought it new, it owes no one anything. I think we changed the brushes once about 20 years ago and of course that is not a stock switch.

FYI if you're looking to buy just one saw this is the one you want becsue it can take the place of just about anything.

Good compressor. That opens doors to any air power tools.
Cordless tools get more powerful by the day. They are like computers.
FAMILIARIZE YOURSELF WITH CRAIGSLIST. You can buy a ton of tools there, but when you see a good deal, you got to be there first.
