So I went out to mow my lawn this afternoon and realized I needed to add gas. So I go get my new gas can, one of those "special" safety ones ... and it doesn't look intuitive at all so I read the instructions ... and they tell me to keep turning the red dial 'til there's a click, BUT THERE'S NEVER A CLICK.

So I couldn't mow my lawn, and I am annoyed. I used to have one of those old-style gas cans that were really easy to use (although less safe I guess?). So my question is: is there some trick to these d*** "wonderful" new cans?!! (I am the first to admit I am not mechanical at all, but sheesh -- it's a gas can!! Why can't I just screw it open??!! )

lol, alas, I have no 10-year-old humans.

I think I am going to have to go back to the local store where I bought it and have them open it for me, but unfortunately they're closed 'til Monday and I really wanted to mow today!!

But seriously, why should a GAS CAN be so d***ed hard to open?!!

I got two of them and can't stand them. I've been scouring craigslist for people selling gas cans so I can hopefully get a few old-style ones and get rid of these.

Thanks for the posts! MrRational, I watched those videos ... it's good to know I'm not the only one who HATES these new cans; I may try to follow that 2nd guy's advice about modifying the new cans, if I can't find my old one (it's packed away somewhere -- I need to find it SOON so I can go back to using it!!).

Reps to all for trying or at least sympathizing!

Those new cans are a joke, you need three hands. I've spilled more gas than ever with them, thank you EPA for your concern about the environment.

One little trick is to drill a hole in it on the top near the handle like the old cans had, put a screw in it. Take the screw out when you're going to pout gas, that will at least allow you pour it without having to stand there for 2 days.

Because the idiots in Washington decided it was important to minimize vapors from these cans, never mind all that damn gas I've spilled becsue of these freaks of nature.

Go to an auto parts store. Buy a replacement gas tank tap (with a screw shutoff) and about five feet of gas line (about $20 total). Drill a hole for the tap near the bottom directly under the fill hole. using a broom handle to push and vise grips to grab and pull, insert the tap into the hole, then attach the gas line to it. Set the tank up on top of what you want to fill, loosen the nozzle that came with the can so that the can breathes, insert the gas line end into the tank you want to fill, then screw open the shutoff and the gas will come out at a rate that is easily controlled, and with zero spillage.
