My faux-wood blinds have yellowed due to our intense sun exposure here in Phoenix, AZ (the side not exposed to the sun is as white as ever- so no problem there)! I've already tried various cleaning methods after having done some research on the web, but nothing so far seems to work in getting the yellow out. The blinds aren't that old (about 3 years), and are really nice otherwise, so I'd like to keep them.
Since nothing else has worked, I'm tempted to try painting them white. Or maybe using shoe polish? Or something else? Is that a crazy idea? Not sure how adhesive the paint would be, or if this would be more trouble than it's worth?
Plastic yellows in the sun. No amount of cleaning will change it.
Try the paint... what do you have to lose?
Thanks, Pitt Chick. I figured as much. That being the case, I wonder if I should just use the same interior white wall paint I have already on hand, or perhaps there's another type intended more for plastic surfaces (or maybe even exterior paint would be more adhesive)? I don't know much about paints...
The paint will probably have runs and sags. I would replace and invest in a UV blocking sun film for the windows. Carpet and furniture also get damaged from excess sun.
If you decide to paint, make sure you use one with UV protection. Typical interior house paint will fade or yellow in direct intense sunlight. I agree with harry, you need to block the sun rays before they touch the blinds. Check with your electric utiiity company as there are several energy rebates on full window sunscreens. I know in AZ many electric utility companies will rebate a certain amount per square foot on all east, west and south facing windows that are coverd with 80% and above sunscreens.
