We have one of those pass through laundry rooms from the kitchen to the garage. It's small. I hate it. So on one side there's the washer and dryer and on the other there's just a wall. We have an oversized two car garage that we don't park our cars in. We store our junk in there pretty much. I want to bump out a wall into the garage to make a bigger laundry room. Is that even possible? Would it be worth the cost? Also, I just got a new washer/dryer delivered today and I didn't realize how huge they are! Now my laundry room feels even smaller! I would have to move our water heater if we bumped it into the garage. Thoughts?

Default Thoughts

Get rid of the junk in the garage.

What would getting rid of the junk do for me? My point is that we don't use our garage to park cars, so I want to use some of that space to increase the space in my laundry room. I'm sorry, nightcrawler that you have a portable washer in your kitchen. My old house had a laundry closet. I get it, I'm used to a small laundry area. It's just something I've been thinking about and wondering if if's doable. I guess anything is doable, but not sure if spending the money on that is the best use of money. maybe... not sure.

Would it be worth spending the $$$$$ on it? If that is what you want-yes, it would be worth it. You have the space to make it a bigger room as opposed to putting on an addition. What you should do is get a few estimates from contractors to see how much it will cost to do. Once you have those estimates then double it. Then you can make more of informed decision whether it is worth it or not.

Yes, pretty much anything like that is possible.
Only YOU know if it is worth the cost.

I guess I don't see why it's an issue. You say it is a pass through to the garage, which stores your junk and not your cars.
How often do you actually pass through there?

I'd be concerned that if you steal space from your garage to expand your laundry room you may be reducing the garage from a two-car to a one-car garage, which would probably make the house less marketable when you want to sell.

We pass through there to get to our garbage cans basically. Also we have an extra freezer out there. My husband has his tools, beer making stuff, etc out there. We don't have a basement, so our garage serves as a basement would to most other people.

Jack, that's what I think, however, it's oversized, so I wonder if I can reduce the garage to a standard two car garage, if that would be acceptable. it's basically a two car garage but extra deep. I would take the extra depth to expand the laundry.

Beer is more important than laundry. Leave your poor husband his space.
