We will have a drywall guy out this week, but I wanted to see if we could get opinions before we get an opinion.
One picture it is almost impossible to see, but it's near the center of the picture- the drywall bulges just slightly out for about 8 inches horizontally. No water stains whatsoever.
The other picture, you can see cracks at all the joints. We have put putty over many of the cracks, which is why it's so ugly. We had a few nails pop out so we put in screws and puttied those, making it uglier.
No water stains anywhere. Does water damage always leave marks? Why would drywall bulge a little? Where it bulges there is slight paint peel, but not much.
Thanks for any ideas, guys. Just trying to get a feel before we get people out to look.
Your pics are too close to see what/where. But I'll assume it's the apex of a vaulted ceiling. If that is in-fact the case, THAT is your problem.
The rafters and the ridge move TOO much for that structural design- expansion, contraction, and wind loads. The ceiling's apex needs to have collar ties added- giving you a 14"-18" wide flat ceiling running the length of the vault. This will reinforce the roof framing, minimizing movement, and decrease the angle(s) that drywall tape is applied. The best type of tape for this is called Flex Tape. It's a flocked plastic tape designed specifically for this type of installation.

Its a rather sustained moisture issue. Gysums expands when damp or wet. Latex paint peals for two reasons. Fist is lost cohesion; the second is expansion beyond flexural capacity. To locate odds are you'll just go upward. However, just know that water is lazy and will always follow the path of least resistance toward ground.
