We're having a 10' X 10' X 8' redwood pergola put in our back yard. On the west side, I'd like to get a 10' wide screen that we could roll up and down as needed to shelter from both wind and late afternoon sun. It's usually a little breezy outside, so I was hoping to figure a way to hook the bottom to the pergola posts to keep the screen from blowing around when lowered. I'd like some visibility through the screen, but need it primarily for shade.
An internet search showed there are a lot of options and I'm not even sure where to start.
Suggestions? Ideas? Things I should be thinking about?
Start with any local shade/awning company. Tell them what your goal is and they will educate you enough so that you know what to look for and then you'll be able to compare with what else is available.
For an almost no-cost retainer, a few eye hooks and "string"...I used heavy duty nylon fishing line... on the inside will keep the shade from blowing in.
We have something like this on our Pergola. It works well, has held up to the weather well. We have it on cup hooks so we can easily take it down for the winter.
Thanks for the suggestions everyone! I appreciate the information. Went to Lowes last night and saw that they have "Coolaroo" shades for under $100 in the 10' width. Not sure how they might attach at the bottom to keep from blowing inward, but I appreciate the ideas. I suppose even if I have to I could add grommet holes to the shade and cup hooks to the pergola posts to secure when needed. Can't wait! We just had a heat wave here in Nor Cal. I'm really looking forward to shade on my patio!
