How hard is it to replace the seal? It looks like it is glued or something to the actual freezer bottom. Do I need to call in some professional or can this job be done by a non-technical woman like me.

In your case it's not the magnet, but the aging has caused it to lose it's ability to expand and spring back when opened. It is a fairly easy DIY project for someone with basic tool skills, but if you are intimidated by it, and the freezer is still cooling well, go ahead and pay a professional. At the same time they can do a thorough cleaning of the compressor and coils. The gasket will likely be about $100 to buy yourself, and double that to have someone bring and install it. Call and ask, if that's all that it needs, they should be able to give you a pretty close quote.
