I have a hard time imagining that a reputable landscaper would put a tree that close to the house. I would not have accepted the house with the tree that close. It should be moved before the roots establish themselves.

If tree roots can move a slab foundation, what do you think it will do to a sheet of aluminum?

I see that ALL the time with new houses and at existing houses with a big tree inches away from the foundation.

How about we find out FOR SURE what species and variety you have, look it up, find its canopy diameter at maturity, then measure the distance of the tree from the house. Does that measurement fall +/- 5' from 1/2 the diameter? If it doesn't, contact the builder and let them know that they have an idiot for a landscaper and have the tree replanted, or replaced with a tree that will not infringe on the foundation of the home.

It's not rocket science! Don't try to put a Band-Aid on a problem that will just perpetuate itself.

Oh; by-the-way, "kill the roots", KILL THE TREE!
