Ditto on Mr. Beams. Battery operated motion light. It's supposed to come on only when it's dark outside, so it's not unnecessarily coming on during daylight hours.

I have one in my basement stairwell and use that area probably 3-4 times a day and batteries lasted for 1 full year.

In my area they are only available at Home Depot. They come in various sizes.

I actually thought you were joking. I'm not sure. If you're serious you need to hire a electrician.

The reason a exterior outdoor light is mounted in a box is for safety. Both for you, people around you and your house.
