Is my concern about contaminants a valid worry? If so, should I stick with looking at new furniture?

If you wouldn't let used furniture deter you from buying, what things do you look for to ensure you aren't taking someone else's pest problem into your home?

Has anyone steam cleaned a couch?? Does it make a difference?
I have, when I was in college. No problems at all. My friends have as well.

Recently, our couch was in our basement when we had it finished. We didn't realize that drywall dust would get all over/ into our couch and had it professionally steam cleaned (I can't remember the cost) and it came out great. As good as new!

I wouldn't. To me it's like purchasing used underwear or mattresses since who knows what happened on that couch.

I have one now. It's a beautiful couch and very high quality...something I wouldn't have been able to afford new. Not once has "yuck" ever crossed my mind.

Nope. The bedbug problem is out-of-control here in my part of the Northeast. I can't tell you how many patients I have seen with bedbug bites. Nope, no used couch for me, doesn't matter how immaculate the home is.

If financial necessity dictated it, I would consider.
At the current time HELL NO, just like I can't bring myself to bring used shoes with other peoples oily footprints etched inside.

If it were a rare historical style or antique, yes. If it seemed nasty, I would have it fumigated or reupholstered.

If it was just some overstuffed monstrosity of 80s-90s vintage, no.

I purchased a used couch when we were starting out in life. That was a long time ago. We don't have to do that anymore. We pay cash for our furnishings and buy new. Last time we bought a couch was when we bought our home. It still looks nice, fits our needs. I know my wife wants to buy another living room set though and in a year or two we will probably do that. I don't like change much but she would change the furniture all the time if she could.

The mark up on the price of couches is ridiculous. That's one item where there's definitely some wiggle room to try negotiating.

I wouldn't take the chance of bringing bed bugs or fleas into my house just to save a few bucks. If it won't fit into a dishwasher I won't buy it used.
