We'll be replacing a couple of old toilets with new Toto low flow models (required here in CA). The old toilets are from the 70's, with large tanks (4-5 gal per flush).
Should I dispose of them or give them away? Is there enough demand for these old (non-low flow) toilets such that I could just place an ad on Craigslist and someone will come buy and pick them up off the curb? Or maybe I can even find a plumber who would install the new toilets in exchange for giving him the old ones? Thanks.
If low flow toilets are required in your area, (as they are in many), then I very much doubt anyone will pay you for them or whether a plumber would barter his services for them. Why would he -what would he do with them other than take on the burden of disposing them?
Bones has the best idea as far as getting any potential money - rebate. Other than that I think you're probably out of luck.
After doing a quick search of toilet regs. in CA. It sounds like you would not be able to sell your used toilets. If someone will give a rebate, I'd say grab it, cause that is all you are gonna get at of it.
Some people hate the new toilets and seek out the older ones.
The OP is in CA, which has very serious water issues - the low flow toilets are required if you are replacing - as stated in the OP. There are good low-flow toilets available.
In my neighborhood, some people put them in their front yard and turn them into flower pots.
