I had occasion to stay with a few people lately and I noticed all 3 of them had refrigerators packed so full, you could not insert another pint of milk. No kidding. One was a retired couple, 2 were retired single seniors. They all lived close to shopping, so this is obviously a personal choice. But how could one person eat that much food before it went bad?

Growing up, there was always room in our fridge, even with 4 kids.

Ours today is half (at least) empty, for just the two of us retired. We shop once or twice a week. We have a small top freezer, also half-full.

Just curious. The reason I "cared" about it, was we were moving and had a few items from our own fridge and there was no room in our host's. We had a cooler, but it started me wondering.

Shopping for me requires 80~90 minutes of driving (round trip), and I try to only go once every 10 days. So, on shopping day there are times when I simply can't fit everything I bought into the fridge... easy fix, I usually make dinner early and leave it in the oven. At the End of those 10 days and our fridge is down to condiments and a few staples. Freezer is typically full of left-overs that are on rotation, meats that were on sale, and other "meal parts" that can be used for a meal if push came to shove. I work hard to keep the freezer full.

I don't do pre-prepared foods, you know... the stuff that's mostly in a box (hamburger helper) or just toss in a skillet/the oven, so I have a lot of raw ingredients.

I've found with my mother-in-law, she always has leftovers from doggie bags when we take her out for dinner or lunch. She hates throwing things out! She gives her unwanted to us and I just toss when I get them home.

I have no idea how old the stuff is.

Our fridge is not full by any means. If we did fill it, with just the two of us, most would go bad before we ever ate it.

Pretty much yes. Disclaimer: it's a side by side so the refrigerator space is a bit smaller than in a conventional one.

It's also a newer one so there's a lot of wasted space for vegetables (two very deep drawers) while the meat drawer can hardly hold a package of hamburger.

Our freezer was so jam packed I was miserable. 3rd week of grocery shopping and I'm still not buying any frozen vegetables, side dishes, or meats. With a demanding FT job and a family of 4 I get caught in making sure you don't run out of anything - to an excess.

Not at the moment. The only time when it is REALLY full is when we have a house full.

My SIL, however, her refrigerator is usually jam packed that you have a hard time finding anything in it not to mention being able to fit something in. And she lives alone. But, the last time we were at her place, she actually cleaned it out and there was more room-but still pretty full.

about the same, I buy frozen food on sale & like to keep a good variety in the freezer. There will always be ground beef/turkey, chicken breast, fish, & some pork in the freezer. I do not belive in buying food that is not on sale. The fridge gets full too, as 2 gallons of milk take up a shelf. I also buy a lot of fresh produce so that takes up toom too. A full freezer is also more energy efficient.

No. My refrigerator is usually mostly empty. My freezer is usually full.
I don't like to waste food, so I normally only buy perishables as I need them and then use them right away.
