Solid cedar, massive enough to withstand OK weather. It will be here until we leave. The ones from 20+ years ago in GA/AL survived tornadoes and hurricanes and are still standing.

People love or hate them. I am a lover. Green them up, cover them with fabric, tempered glass, ...

A limo company in my town has one in its parking lot and they park some of their limos under it. That always seemed pointless to me... A carport would have been better.

as is , it is a useless yard feature, but get some white covering, or even a lattice roof helps. I much prefer the idea of mood lighting, and funky fabric prints. I also like an idea I saw, where plastic or tin panels were used as roofing material.

a gazebo is much better, but I would imagine adding roofing will be easy to do on a pergola.

You put a "roof" on a pergola, in essence you have a gazebo- the two are not the same. And to infer that they are is just wrong!

My patio roof is half pergola. I like the way it looks and I like the shadows it cast on the ground.

Now this make a bit of sense to me. The negative feature of a closed roof (which is still outweighed by the good) is that it could make the inside dark. If one has half and half, the furniture stays dry, but more light gets into the house.

I can see how the shadows would be interesting, too.

They are intended to grow vines on. That is why the "roof" is slatted.

They work really well for grape vines. If you maintain your grape vines right, the bunches of grapes will hang down below the pergola roof and be very easy to harvest.

They can block the sun without blocking the wind, so they can be cooler. Shade is cooler when there is also a breeze.
