you have to hold the handle down until it flushes.
I replaced the flapper. I adjusted the chain.
Still doesn't flush right. Am I missing something?
do I have to replace the entire guts? I bought the entire innards, but hating doing it.

Welcome to toilet talk

Toilet repairs can be tricky - as you now know, and flappers are not all the same. Most likely, you have a 1.6 gallon per flush toilet. Be sure the flapper is for a 1.6 gpf toilet (a 1.6 gpf flapper won't work on a 3.5 gpf model). Better yet, if you know the brand of toilet, get a replacement specifically designed for that model. Some are proprietary - meaning you cannot install a universal type. Some have small floats attached to the chain. If you know the make, you could try a web search.

Not knowing what "innards" you bought, that can be even more challenging, because it may involve removing the tank from the bowl. Not a fun job.

Another option would be to take a few photos of the toilet and inside the tank. Go to a plumbing supply store and show them the pics, then to the home center/hardware. Try to find someone knowledgeable that could help you, or may even be willing to come fix it for you.

Something to consider - especially if the toilet is older - install a new one.

Hope this helps, and good luck!

I've fixed dozens of toilets. Or maybe fewer toilets dozens of times. I even replaced the insides of this same toilet a few years ago.

I did try a universal flapper; it didn't seal right. This new one seals right, and it is filled with air, but just doesn't stay up long enough for a proper flush.

The handyman was going to fix it, but hasn't had time, and I have guests coming tomorrow.

I may resort to a "hold the handle down for a count of 3" sign. That IS progress, though; for the last few weeks, it's been "hold the handle down until your fingers cramp"

Sounds like either a bad flapper or the chain is not lifting the flapper up high enough.

I think the latter; maybe when I have more time, I'll try adjusting the handle/lifter bar.

Raise the water level in the tank would be my first suggestion.

Make sure the flapper goes up as high as possible is my second.

Try a different configuration of flapper is my third.

You can also choose to live with it. I have had many toilets like this and it's just not that big a deal. Hold the lever down longer.

We're getting ready to sell the house, so it's good to have it work properly.

thanks for suggestions!
