We are in the process of building a new home and the electrical rough in is complete. The boxes for the plugs, switches, ceiling rights are all there, the wires are run to each but there are no actual switches/plugs installed yet. My husband has a workshop in the basement and he going to install 4’ LED shop fixtures. He thought he was buying the kind that have a cord and a plug, and had the electrician put plugs in the ceiling, but now he finds what he bought need to be hard wired. Obviously the power will be there, but is the electrician going to cuss and gnash his teeth when he finds out these need to be hardwired and not plugged in? The plugs will be controlled with a light switch.

Depends on the electrician. If its in their contract to install the all fixtures, then it shouldn't make any difference.

They could also just add a plug onto the fixtures he bought. The only real difference is aesthetics.

Of course, I am assuming the fixtures have a knockout that the cord could be run through. Bit more of a pain if they don't.

Yes there are knockouts for the (current) wiring. I already thought about adding a plug.

Just wondering if it’s going to be a big deal when electrician is expecting to plug them and he finds he has to actually wire them. He’s going to install them - that has been agreed to already.

If those lights are part of the contract and not purchased outside the contract, the point of the pre-sheetrock walk thru is to catch these things. If it's done wrong, it needs to be corrected now so they aren't tearing out sheetrock later and then trying to match the patch.

Will the electrician freak out - no, probably not. Will he charge you extra - possibly. If the contract called for receptacles, then you will have to pay to have them changed. If he messed up, then it's on him to fix it.

There’s no receptacles there yet, just the box and the wiring. In any event, we’ve ‘fessed up with the builder (pre-sheetrock) and we’ll see where the chips fall.

Why should the electrician get mad, extra work should come with extra expenses. The change will not be hard for any competent electrician.

Final update: Electrician says its no problem. He will just cover the receptacle box with a plate with a small hole for the wires. We begin sheetrock on Monday!
