I went from a house with a garage, to a townhouse without one. I didn't think it was going to be a big deal, but it kind of is. It's the only thing I don't like about my current place. I live in New Hampshire though, so the snow and ice are a big factor in this for me. That and the neighborhood cats that like to walk all over my hood.

My new house has a garage and I am very happy about that. I will certainly use it in bad weather at least. It is detached, so I will probably park in the driveway a lot as well.

In the majority of the country, there are no attics. My kids and grandkids, have never lived in a home with an attic, and most have never been in one with an attic.

They use factory built trusses to build the home.

https://www.building-a-home-info.com...struction.html

Pre-built roof trusses, are used, not the old fashioned ones with roof supports built by hand. Much more precise building method. And a lot stronger construction.

Much better wind and snow load construction.

Much stronger in earth quake areas.

Much less costly construction.

Very little of the country has attics.

They are not built for having an attic. Trusses for an attic, end up costing considerably more, including a lot more expense for shingles, etc.

Engineered floor joists, are also used in most construction today. Makes a very flat, level floor, more accurate
than the old fashioned 2/12. Floors stay flat, and are stronger.

As the thread title says, I just continue to marvel at the number of people who have garages but don't park in them. Either:
-- they enclose the garage for more living space, OR
-- have so much junk, uh, have so many belongings they need the garage for storage. Some garages are packed to the door. You can't even step inside.
OR

Their garage was built in 1925 and even a compact car doesn't fit. My Mazda3 can pull into my garage, but I'd have to climb out the sunroof to get out of the car., and I wouldn't be able to shut the overhead door. Sitting the car out in the weather overnight is less damaging than my heels on the hood, and shutting the overhead door protects the lawnmower etc. from thieves.

But maybe so as not to offend some people's delicate sensibilities I should ignore all that ...

Fail. My car isn't worth $40,000.

Not necessarily stronger. The real reason engineered trusses are used is, as it always is: money. They're cheaper and don't require any construction experience to employ.

The big downside, besides no attic space, is they're an absolute disaster in a fire. Most fire departments have an unwritten rule that truss roof homes should be left to burn - way too dangerous to enter.

I have never had a garage that I felt comfortable driving in or out of.

Oh, good grief it's a passing amusement. Not my life's work. And no one said anyone's delicate sensibilities were offended. Geez.

I suppose some people never, never, ever, ever muse about anything they see that they just happen to notice. They never think, "I wonder why.....XYZ?" about anything that's not directly affecting them.

No thanks. My city's ordinances are just enough to keep things orderly, TYVM.
It's about $$. I can sell higher my property from a good looking neighborhood. I guess I just want more kachings in my pockets.

This wasn't an "I wonder why" as much as a superiority thing.

I always keep my car in the garage. I just don't feel safe to leave it in driveway. But I see a lot of cars in neighborhood in driveway.
