What can be done to ameliorate the cold pouring in from sliding glass doors?

The easy, cheap fix is to seal the door off with plastic. You can purchase a kit from most hardware stores. It is a sheet of plastic that you affix to the frame with double sided tape, then shrink to fit with a standard hair dryer. This stops the air flow, and creates a pocket of air that has some insulating value.

Take it off in the spring and you are good to go.

Does not work if you have cats though.

I would assume if you do this, you can't use the sliders?

Can you put the plastic over blinds?

Correct, but if it is winter, do you need to use the slider?

Depends on how the blinds are attached. You want the plastic to be a continuous flat sheet taped to the window frame. If the blinds or their mounts interfere with this, this solution won’t work. You are trying to create an airtight pocket.

First question is, do you really need to use that slider during the cold season or can you alter your pattern to avoid it? If not, close off with shrink-to-fit plastic. If you must use that door, hang insulated drapes over it and make sure the drapes are a little wider/longer than the slider opening. When you need to use the slider, open them. When you don't, close them. Simple.

I saw a guy on Utube attach bubble wrap to window glass with water in a spray bottle. There are films you can attach to the glass. I have four french doors and I bought two-sided tape like the kind they sell that comes in the window insulation kits, and bought a heavy duty thicker plastic to put on the window glass, so I can still open the doors. You can also attach Mylor to the window glass. Mylor is the lightweight, silver, material used to make space blankets with.

Unfortunately I use them in winter to do things on patio and in storage.

Well, that limits your options considerably.

Most likely the cold air is coming through the gaps around the edges where the doors fit loosely. You could purchase some foam weatherstripping and seal the vertical portions of your door. The portion on the locking side of the frame is simple, just run the weatherstripping where the door will contact the frame. The other side gets attached to the door with the understanding that it will pull off in time as you open and close.

Top and bottom probably don't leak as much air.

If the door is really loose, and/or the seal in the glass portion is broken, it may be cost effective to replace the door.

Do you have blinds or curtains over the sliders? If curtains - try insulated ones - they might block a lot of the cold air and you could still access the sliders. If just blinds, maybe consider adding a curtain rod over and the insulated curtains?
