I bought a house once that was ALL carpet except the kitchen. Bathrooms had dark brown shag carpet right up to the toilets! Of course the toilets were blue/blue cabinets too!
The former owners of our home had carpeting in the bathrooms. We changed it to tile straight away; wasn’t going to wait for the toilet to overflow on the carpet- yuk!
I was in the room when they removed my carpeting to replace it just recently. This was 24 year old carpet. Granted, it was the room above the garage and not much traffic up there the last few years. There was very little dirt, seriously I was surprised because I keep reading posts like this. You people that have all this dirt - what, do you carry it in? Sheesh. Do you wear middy shoes inside?? No pets either. Maybe if you have dogs running in and out - that's where your dirt is coming from.
I don't think you can compare a seldom used room to one that sees daily use, especially if you have kids. The problem is that even if you regularly deep clean your carpets not all of the dirt comes up, so it accumulates. My ex was a carpet installer for a few years, he absolutely refused to have carpeting in any of his homes after that.
I like carpet in bedrooms, but nowhere else....especially not on stairs. If I had wood floors in the bedroom, I’d still want an area rug on the floor.
I've always had it and now that it's time to replace it again I was considering wood or laminate but my friend with laminate tells me that sound in their house (same model as mine) really travels and there are big gaps at the bottom of their bedroom doors and whatnot. It's one of those "one thing leads to another" situations that I'm not up for. Since I'm barefoot 90% of the time in my house I think carpet is the best and most economical choice for me right now. My kitchen/dining area is all tile and it's hard on me.
