Wanted to get ideas of how to improve the curb appeal of my house? My wife is thinking to paint the stucco and brick white, all the trimmings black, and the garage door black. Would that look good? Anyone have other suggestions? I've been trying to find other houses similar to mine with this look but haven't been able to. It's a unique design from 1960s where half of the house has a pitched roof and the other half has a flat roof.
Your house looks like 2 distinctly different houses glued together.
My advice.
Hire an architect on an hourly basis to give you some ideas for improving the overall look.
The cost should only be $400.
Do a lot of planning before making changes.
I think less concrete would be a huge improvement.
i like the white paint and black trimmings look. i actually just did it to my house. im just waiting for the new garage doors to come in. your garage is side facing so i wouldnt waste the money on a new door, just paint. you have two differnent forms of cladding there so i may even consider one white and one gray or some other interesting difference.
id get rid of those trees (but most people wouldnt like that suggestion) and id trim down the stuff in front of the house.
I don't think I would mess with the brick. But I can understand wanting to pull together the two different parts of the house. I would leave the brick and paint the stucco portion some shade of brown to tie it in with the brick. Then see about the garage door and trim. Maybe add some colorful plants in pots.
The bushes are pretty close to the wall, you will have to think about that.
Depending on your home's climate, the brick is not designed or intended to be painted. Drive around the area and look for brick that has been painted. Is it blistering? If so, its a sign that the humidity that brick absorbs from rain, the ground and air can't be "exhaled" for lack of a better term through the mortar which is designed to do this as well as move...yes mortar is designed to move a tad. Brick that is painted is also a more expensive item for a homeowner to keep up. Not only do they have to keep up with the mortar maintenance, but then the brick needs to be painted...might as well have a wood house to paint. Perhaps an inspector would point this out to a prospective buyer, perhaps not. Here most would.
Landscaping* goes a long way, but the agent can tell you based on the market. If its a seller's market, what's the point? Landscaping won't add to the value of the appraisal from what I understand.
*Simplify and remove the shrubs on the right side (perhaps leave just the roses), plant better shrubs on the left, so something to soften the area around the trees in front. Its all manageable, but is it worth a few thousand to do?

Here are some pictures:
IMHO, I don't believe that's a "unique design" from the 60's; rather, you have an original 60's brick rancher with a totally different style garage added onto it at a later date. Personally I would not paint the entire thing white - it's not going to disguise the fact that the two sections don't match and it will destroy the charm and appeal of the original brick house portion. Instead, I would paint the garage addition in a complementary color to the brick portion so it doesn't stick out as much. I'd also do the same for the surrounding wall as well. A darker garage door, although not necessarily black, would probably then be a more appropriate color. I personally like the present plantings as they do provide some camouflage for the garage.
PLEASE do not drink the HGTV kool-aid and paint it white with black trim.
What an incredibly follower thing to do.
But if its on HGTV, it might have more curb appeal to more followers. ???
I'm not sure. I would prefer a more subtle look keeping the natural brick and making less drastic changes than white/black. But, it's what the majority of potential buyers might prefer that is important.
