I live in the south. 77 during the day is quite comfy. But I have it on a schedule to go to 76 during the peak heat of the day, then back up to 77. 78 at night on main floor.
Upstairs is roughly the same, but 75 at night for sleeping.
That's quite cool if we are not all moving around a lot or exercising. If that is the case, I'll bump it down for a bit.
My wife is home at all times due to health issues. She has multiple spinal problems, nerve damage from three spinal surgeries, both knees replaced from arthritis, and she’s only 52. In the summer months we generally keep it at 73. In winter months we keep it at 69. We have an automatic thermostat that will switch heat and cool automatically so no waking up to a home in the 50s nor coming home to a house in the 80s.
Wow, I never realized how much warmer people prefer their homes than I do!
Occasionally I've stayed with friends who keep the AC in the mid to upper 70s in the summer, and sometimes I have to ask them if they would bump it a little lower at night (they're happy to) or I would have a hard time sleeping.
I wonder if I could acclimate to a warmer setting by gradually increasing it over the course of the spring and summer. (Actually, September can be SUPER hot in the south, so it's not solely spring and summer.)
I'm constantly entertained at how I'm freezing when the thermostat is set to 72 in the summer, but broiling when it's set to anything over 68 in the winter.
I have window AC, so the temp settings may seem weird; 75-76 during the day, and 72 at night.
HAH! When people say they are set to 72 year round, all I can say is BRRR in the summer and HOT HOT HOT!!! in the winter.
I have window units, and like many it's more the humidity that gets me to turn it on. Low-mid 80s is find if I'm just sitting around. Of course I'm minimally dressed.
Downstairs gets turned off at night. If it's in the 70s at night outside, I reluctantly leave the upstairs one on (not in the bedroom). My SO turns it off when he gets up.
On cooler nights, I use fans in a couple of windows to pull the air in before bed.
Somebody mentioned Energy Star, but I had always heard 77 or 78 was required to prevent mold.
We keep the split-air unit in the bedroom at 70 for sleeping (way too cold for DH but he accommodates me) as I can't sleep when it's too hot.
During the day, no a/c units run unless I am exercising under a unit. The condo stays around 77 on its own so that is fine for just lazing around. We have 4 ceiling fans we use alternately during the day. I can stand up to 80 if I'm sedentary, but if I'm cooking or food prepping, I have to use the ceiling fan in the kitchen.
I will say we went away for 3 months once, and despite leaving all 4 ceiling fans going, we came home to a house covered in mold. What a thing to come home to after a long trip away. So now we know to keep at least one a/c unit running while we're gone and have somebody check every couple weeks.
