1989 home, wanting to do a minor upgrade and retrofit these old recessed lights with new leds using the kits but the problem is the neck of the socket holds the trim in place instead of spring clips and I need to take that trim off. The wire is attached to the socket I can’t just pull the neck out

Ok, probed a bit more. There is no can or separate trim. It's like this one piece fixture shaped like a bell held into place by clips on four sides.

ETA: It is a Lightolier Series 1100 fixture common in 80s homes. Not the normal recessed can. Not sure what is compatible with it. Wondering if anyone knows of any retrofit kits that can work with these...

I’d go with this-

https://www.ledsupply.com/led-bulbs/...xoCQpgQAvD_BwE

There maybe some extra work to perform depending on the location of the current lights. Mostly- is there attic or just joist cavity? If attic, it may be a good idea to box&seal the fixtures. Joist cavity usually just needs a good seal @drywall.

In 1986 home we have replaced virtually every incandescent with a LED. Our electricians have replaced over half the fluorescents with LED tubes. Even the fancy candelabra's have been converted to LEDs.

Menards sells flat LED lights with screw bases on pigtails. Just screw the base into the existing socket and fasten the LED to the housing rim.

That won’t work- OP lights are trim/can “one piece”. The trim baffle is not a separate piece- there is no “can”/recessed housing. Which is why most of those other LED type retro-fits won’t work for the OP. The link I provided is an entire unit that hardwired into the existing wiring, clips into the existing hole- DONE!
