We don't live in a gated community. My inlaws do (the kind with a guard 24/7).
Makes no difference to crime from what I've seen. It's easy to bypass the main gate (yes, via the secondary, unmanned gate) or go over the wall, which isn't too high.
Crimes tend to be crimes of opportunity. Unlocked cars, unlocked doors, open garages, stealing stuff outside.
Unless you're a celebrity/public figure, probably no one cares where you live.
They make inviting friends and family over a hassle; you always have to be on standby to make sure someone can get in.
It adds a cost to your HOA.
It even adds an extra step for you to enter your own house. Part of owning a house should feel like you can come and go as you please with no one else's permission. As an analogy, it feels like paying for software yet still having to endure the extreme anti-piracy DRM measures.
When did this forum become the Complaint Department!?

Is this the biggest concern you have? Why would it concern you?
BTW, it's not necessarily a hassle. It's similar to an apartment building with a locked front door. If you live there, your key will let you in. If you don't live there, you have to ring the bell and wait to be "buzzed" in. And any real apartment dweller knows not to let in anyone behind them.
We are on acreage down a long private road, and have a gate at our driveway... locked all the time. We haven't gated the whole road yet but we've thought about it and talked about it with the other neighbors.
Out here, it would be to prevent burglaries. That's the biggest appeal for me. Keeps out the casual thief.
A gate at the road would also keep out the occasional trash dumper and teen couple looking for a place to make out.
I have no idea how a gate would prevent burglaries. You would need a lot more than gates and fences to keep thieves out of your house. Now, if you can secure your house as done in some military facilities, maybe the occasional burglar won't break into it.

Works well! You don’t have to be Fort Knox, you just have to be a little harder than the place down the road.

Exactly!
Being in gated secure community did not prevent that couple in Florida from being murdered in their own home.
Everyone. Actually, non members aren't even allowed to bring toys. And visitors are supposed to keep a guest placard in their windshield the entirety of their visit.

Just seems a bit ridiculous having to show all that when you are leaving your own place.
