The bad shutters that came with the builder house, the ones that don't serve any purpose, the vinyl ones. I have, in the last while, had to have a new roof and new porch railings and want to change/paint my shutters to match. However, they are completely useless and I know paint won't last that long on them, so I was thinking of taking them down all around the house and only putting them back in front for aesthetics.

My stupid questions are: When I remove them, there will be some holes. What would be the right thing to fill in the holes with? The new shutters are not quite the same size because heaven forbid anything should be that easy.

I have two bedroom windows facing front and then a double casement window (four windows) that open outwards. They have the same shutters as the bedrooms now, but it's so illogical to put one narrow shutter on each side of the 4-window spread that I wonder if I could do without. Thoughts?

Well, fake shutters are purely for appearance, so you certainly COULD do without.

What to fill holes with - or whether to even bother - depends on what the cladding material is.

What you fill the holes with will depend on your siding. Wooden shingle? T111? Vinyl? Stucco? Brick?

Functional or not, windows without shutters could look out of proportion to the rest of the building.

Removing the fake shutters that were not sized right for the windows was one of the best things we did for our exterior.
We chose to NOT replace them and the house looked so much better! Seriously.
However, we DID replace the siding, so I am of no help in that regard.
Best of luck with your project!

what color is the vinyl?

if it is a deep kind of color, or really any type of color for that matter the house will be faded from the sun, but under the shutters it will be the original color.
I do believe vinyl does fade over time.
As for holes, that is easily plugged up using various methods.

Some windows I believe like the casement 4 that open outwards don't really need shutters, IMO.

Just my .02

This is the best choice I’ve ever run across-

https://www.whynotvinyl.com/1_4_Viny...p/39-20420.htm

There’s generally a color that is close enough- push right in, done! And no caulk!

Two things to consider beforehand:

1. Will you be voiding any warranty for the siding?

2. If you have an HOA, are you allowed to remove them from the side and back of house? If you're changing color, is that acceptable? Essentially, if you live in an HOA, get it in writing; submit the changes to the architectural committee for approval before doing anything.

(Please do not derail this thread with discussions and comments about "evil HOA's).

We had our house painted last summer. We had the painters remove the old plastic shutters, fill the screw holes with caulk before painting, and we love the new look without them. You can always buy and install new ones later, but I would definitely try without.
