I noticed a fishy smell in our 1/2 bath so we called an electrician as I know that could mean melting wires; which he found was the case. He replaced 2 outlets and switches downstairs, and 3 upstairs but the fishy smell is now noticeable upstairs. Does it just take time to dissipate? My husband thinks so but I'm not so sure; any advice is appreciated.
Was it just the receptacles and switches? Or was it the wire? Or both?
Romex can certainly give off a pretty nasty smell when burnt- and the plastic of wiring devices have their own smell.
Depending on ventilation, the odors can dissipate in a matter of days. Other times/other conditions, it maybe longer- even weeks. However, it’s also possible that your problem still persists- you may have an overload problem.
The wires were melting so the electrician replaced the outlets / switches. The smell is only slight this morning so i'm assuming that all is ok. Thank you for your reply.
I have the same concern as KB. Were the wires replaced? Corrosion at terminals is a weak point, but examination of the wires themselves is prudent. Follow-up, do you know if the wire was aluminum?
I don't know if the wires are aluminum. The electrician removed and replaced the receptacles and the smell is completely gone so I'm assuming all is good..no?
Thanks. He is very reputable so I think we're ok :-)
Well, if the house burns down and it’s “electrical related” you at least know who will be paying for the rebuild!
